Initiative to Erase Prop 8 Is Ready for Signature Gathering
(Citizen List) 20 March 2009
A new ballot initiative is seeking to erase Proposition 8 from the California Constitution.
The new constitutional amendment would make same-sex marriages legal in California. It just received a ballot title and summary from the state attorney general. This means that its proponents can begin collecting signatures, in an effort to qualify for the November 2010 ballot.
“This is a blatant attack on Proposition 8,” England said. “Those who do not understand the sanctity of husband-wife marriage are working relentlessly to sweep aside the voices of more than seven million California citizens who voted for Proposition 8.”
“A glance at the Los Angeles Times county-by-county map of votes on Prop 8 shows the statewide support for husband-wife marriage as a bedrock of society,” England said.
The timing of this signature gathering coincides with the California Supreme Court’s forthcoming ruling on whether Proposition 8 was a valid constitutional amendment. It appears that Prop 8 opponents anticipated a loss in the Supreme Court -- and they are now positioned to capitalize on the emotion that could be generated by the court’s rejection of their legal reasoning.
“This new initiative contains deceptive language. If the people of California supported same-sex marriages, the opponents of husband-wife marriage would not need to be so devious in their attempts to void Proposition 8,” England said.
“California citizens thought the battle for husband-wife marriage was won when they passed Prop 8, but the battle is just beginning,” she said.
In this long term battle, Capitol Resource Institute needs finances to educate voters on the threat to marriage. Citizens must understand the issues in order to stand up and defend their values.
